Primary Objective

To provide technical support to professional officers in applied rangeland and livestock trials. To lead and assist as appropriate

pastoral production trials and the preparation and implementation of extension programs consistent with identified regional


Context Statement

This position is based in Katherine and mainly services the Katherine Region, but also can include travel to remote locations for

extended periods.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Under direction, implement field trials designed to meet the needs of new and immerging trends in livestock and rangeland


2. Assist and be responsible for the collection, collation, entering and processing of research data related to livestock production

and native pastures, both as a team member and on occasion project manager.

3. Collect field data including samples, as directed, and prepare for further analysis.

4. Assist with the preparation of displays, industry courses and extension material. This will include assisting with

demonstrations, field days and other methods of transferring technical data to cattle producers

5. Assist with preparation of technical reports and extension material.

6. Undertake routine purchasing and undertake or arrange for equipment maintenance.

7. Manage and maintain the Pastoral Production assets including pooled vehicles, data-collection and other field equipment.

Selection Criteria


1. Tertiary qualifications in Agricultural Science, Rural Science or Natural Resource Management, or substantial professional


2. Extensive knowledge of stock and station skills, including horsemanship, fencing and machinery operation and practical cattle

husbandry skills consistent with the effective analysis, interpretation and application of pastoral research and a sound

understanding of the pastoral industry.

3. Ability to work independently, forward plan and develop personal work programs, as well as being able to function as an

effective team member.

4. High level of self-motivation and an ability to carry out demanding work programs in remote pastoral locations.

5. Demonstrated interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, and proven ability to prepare accurate and clear reports.

6. Sound computing skills in an office and field environment – word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and internet.

7. Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel safely to remote pastoral areas.


1. Experience in the use and application of crush-side livestock recording systems, GIS, statistical, or other relevant computer

and field data collection technology.
