The Competition & Compliance team looks after antitrust and compliance matters at METRO. The team is responsible for operating and developing METRO’s compliance management system, particularly with a view to antitrust compliance. It is also responsible for all antitrust matters outside of antitrust compliance, including antitrust recovery and merger control. The Competition & Compliance team is part of the overall department of Compliance, Competition, Procurement Partnerships & Regulatory within the Corporate Legal Affairs & Compliance division.

Where your expertise is needed:
Your portfolio of responsibilities will comprise two key areas: antitrust/competition (majority of your workload) and compliance.

As regards antitrust, you will primarily focus on three different topics:

Firstly, you will be the corporate counsel for a selected number of local heads of legal in METRO country organizations, supporting them with antitrust law expertise in day-to-day business and including implementing a group-wide antitrust program and defending in government investigations and court cases.

Secondly, you will be working cross-functionally in M&A transactions supporting M&A colleagues including primary responsibility for merger control associated with M&A projects.

Thirdly, you will be a driving factor for implementing a group-wide antitrust recovery program which focuses on recovering damages had supplier cartels.

As regards compliance, you will focus on three different elements.

Firstly, you will be responsible to develop, fine tune and revise compliance tools deployed to our country organizations, easy to understand and ready for use.

Secondly, you will be the corporate counsel for a selected number of local compliance officers on the basis of solid line agreements, focusing on directing for professional quality, implementing best practices and role modeling a business partner attitude and trusted advisor for compliance incident handling.

Thirdly, you will tailor compliance requirements to the needs of a lean wholesale business, preventing corporate requirements from unnecessarily limiting business opportunities or customer centricity, while safeguarding METRO’s integrity and reputation. Supporting the business, customer centricity and adding value while safeguarding against risks and staying clear of compliance no-go areas are guiding principles for all of these responsibilities.

What we are looking for:
You are an out-of-the-box thinker with a solid cross-functional mindset and a genuine interest in our business. You dream big, get stuff done and are fun to work with. You are motivated to conflict but are diplomatic, convincing and innovative in execution and communication.

We are seeking to recruit a legal professional with in-depth and hands-on experience in antitrust law matters. Experience in criminal law compliance as well as in working in groups with diverse cultural backgrounds is an asset.

The desire to engage with and understand customers and their business needs in an international environment comes naturally to you. You do not shy away from taking decisions and are ruthless in defending them if put to test by authorities or other stakeholders. You are focused in taking action whenever opportunity for improving the way things are done presents itself. Your documented history of being part of change and directing change is compelling.

You hold a law degree from a university in the European Union. You are fluent in English and German. Additional languages are an asset. You have at least a couple of years of in-depth experience working in antitrust law in an international law firm, multi-national company and or antitrust authority of the EU or one of its Member States.
