JOB SUMMARY

The mandate of the Health Promotion Service area is to advocate for safe, supportive, healthy community environments through the development of healthy public policy and the delivery of programs associated with Healthy Growth and Development, Chronic Disease Prevention, School Health, Immunization, Dental Health, and for advancing the development of healthy public policy to effect system-wide change that improves the population’s health while addressing inequities in the health of subpopulations in Ottawa.

You perform all phases of dental reception duties including greeting clients, scheduling appointments, inputting data, maintaining an accurate patient/records management system, ensuring clerical supplies are ordered when required, and performing other clerical/office maintenance duties as required. You also carry out dental assisting functions on an as needed basis.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of Grade 12 and 1 year of Dental Assisting Level 1 course

Minimum of 1 year of experience as a dental assistant, and experience in computerized dental applications

KNOWLEDGE

Principles and practice of current reception and dental assisting techniques

Computerized dental applications

Knowledge of eligibility for various socially funded dental plans

Microsoft Office Suite

Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Greet patients courteously and professionally

Schedule appointments in an organized and efficient manner

Maintain an accurate and up-to-date patient records/management system

Check stock inventory and order supplies when required

Excellent customer care and communication skills

Perform dental assisting on an as needed basis

Explain policies and processes to patients proficiently

Juggle multiple priorities (telephones, patient requests, data input, records management, inventory control) on an on-going basis

Remains professional at all times in dealing with clients and dental health practitioners

Works co-operatively in a team setting

Displays a high level of tact, discretion, sensitivity and care in dealing with clients/patients

Non-judgmental, empathetic, calm demeanour

Punctual, reliable, takes initiative as required, self-motivated

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.

You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.

Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
